Abstract: It focuses on the effects of different open science policies — both national and institutional policies — on the practices of knowledge production and dissemination among researchers in the natural sciences (physics, biology, and chemistry) across three distinct national contexts: Brazil, France, and Peru. Particular attention is given to unintended consequences and the reinforcement of inequalities, offering a comparative perspective to current debates in open science. Employing a qualitative approach, such as semi-structured interviews, complemented by a documentary analysis of policy instruments, my research aims to produce nuanced insights into how open science is enacted and negotiated by scientific communities, often resulting in grey zones in practice.
These are the thesis’ empirical chapters: Contextualization: research cultures and organisation of laboratory work in the communities, Imaginaries of open science: meanings and values in question, Dark effects: unintended consequences, resistances and fears: paradoxes of the current open science model, Researchers’ communities’ opinions and recommendations on open science and its policies, Open science practices and policies in knowledge production formats, Open science and public science communication, Data cultures in the different data-intensive epistemic traditions, Dynamics of collaboration, division of labor and competition in an open science environment, Ethical issues and research integrity: scientific misconduct and questionable research practices in an open science environment
